swiss national day

The Swiss know how to celebrate! August 1 is Swiss National Day which celebrates the charter of 1291 which founded the Swiss confederacy. Interestingly, it wasn't until 1994 that this was celebrated as the official date of the national holiday.
Fireworks are the big event on the evening of the 31st of July. They started with a teaser over the river at 10:30. While that was going on a barge pulled up in the middle of the river right in front of where we were standing along the riverbank. At exactly 11:15 the show began. It was crazy!

There were so many fireworks going off at times that the whole opposite bank was lit up. It was really quite beautiful!

I don't think I would have wanted to have been one of these people on the barge. There was also a barge a little further down the river on the other side of the bridge giving the same show that we were seeing.
