prairie sky

The sky here is so big. It's amazing to see how big the sun is and how amazing the sunsets are. Today as we were finishing up at the house I looked out our only west window and this is what I saw. I ran to the van and got my camera so I could share this glorious sight with you! Tomorrow is picture time at the house. You will be amazed at what you see!

it's wet

It has been so wet here. The ditches and fields are covered in water. Many crops are sitting and waiting and rotting. It's rather a gloomy situation. Today was a gloriously beautiful fall day but we will need a few more days like today to dry up the water. I have to say that it makes for some pretty nice pictures, though.......

getting there

Saturday was a big day as you can see. Our house is starting to feel more like a house and less like a construction site. It's a good feeling!

Our sister-in-law brought us supper which gave us the boost we needed to work long into the evening. What a treat that was!

trees

The nurseries have great fall sales on right now to try to clear out huge amounts of stock before winter. We got the flyer in our mailbox so off we went to find the deals.
We bought 3 Amur Maple trees and one Weeping Willow. Lovely little trees. We also found a man, who owned the nursery, who said he had been "looking" for us. He attends the church in St. Pierre where we will most like attend and when he asked us a bit about ourselves it wasn't long before he discovered that we were the ones from Germany that he was supposed to invite to church! Love this small world here!

fall is on its way

It's been pretty nippy these days. The striking difference about fall here compared to Germany is that the wind is so forceful. As a result cooler temps feel significantly cooler! Can't wait to feel that wind when the winter cold sets in......

it's been awhile

We've been rather preoccupied. We are making good progress on the house but there are still some delays. The painter was supposed to paint the ceilings today but he didn't show up. That is just a little bit frustrating.....
But it's coming along. This will be my amazing pantry!
Today Howard painted the main room in the basement and tomorrow we will hopefully finish up the rest.
Notice how clean it is. We are ready for the painters!

off to college

This picture was taken in a hurry as the girls were rushing off to their classes yesterday morning. They are both excited to be starting a new year.

the house

Progress is being made. Things are actually further along now than when I took these pictures.
Conrad is working hard and we try to help him when we can. Howard's big project last week along with some help from his dad and also Conrad's "crew" was to get the basement all dry-walled. It's all finished now and the taper put on the first coat today.
My job last week was to run the router around all the little base pieces for the door mouldings. It was a dirty job, but someone had to do it! Actually it was really fun and I feel like I actually contributed something.

grand beach

Our goal for our day out was to spend a good amount of time at Grand Beach. That we did. It was a perfect day. Lake Winnipeg is so big that it looks like the ocean and with the waves coming in at regular intervals, one can almost believe that it is!
The beach is wide and the sand is wonderful.

The first time Howard took me up to Grand Beach was the year after we were married. I was amazed at the sand and the huge dunes. I still am!

day out part 2

We made lots of stops as we drove along the river. This one pretty much took our breath away! What a gorgeous place!
This old "Red River" house has been completely restored. Howard said he'd seen it listed on the internet for 1.2 million. We thought that was rather "cheap" for such a house.
St. Andrew's Church was built between 1845 and 1849. It is the oldest stone church in western Canada. Notice how the tower is leaning.

The St. Andrew's rectory is a national historic site and dates from 1864.
Part of the gardens at the tea house.
