rocky harbour, newfoundland

We stayed in this little village for 5 nights.
The view from our hotel room was absolutely stunning.
Each evening everyone gathered across the street to take pics of the sunset.
These pictures are all from our first evening there.
The changes in the sky in those few minutes as the sun
was setting were incredible.

back to reality

Several weeks ago a pretty ferocious storm blew in
leaving our deck with quite an impressive drift.
Howard shoveled it off a few days ago.
Good thing.
Yesterday we had yet another brutal storm.
If it hadn't been a holiday it would have definitely been a storm day.
This morning the deck looked like this
and we enjoyed a gloriously cold and sunny day after the storm.
And
all the schools in the area were closed due to
stormed in roads.

the rock

Another winter storm this morning makes thinking back to
arriving in Newfoundland
even sweeter.
The ferry service to Newfoundland is erratic, at best.
The islanders are pretty much fed up with their portion of
the Trans Canada highway.
Our trip across was delayed almost 7 hours.
On the way back, we waited almost 5 hours before casting off
way behind schedule.
The up side - the crossings were smooth and as a result - fast
and the ferries are gorgeous ships.
 The waiting room.
 Wide and beautiful highways.
The Gros Morne mountain gives its name to
Gros Morne National Park.
Miles and miles of moose fences.
We did not see one moose on our 9 hour return journey.

on the cabot trail

The Rankin Family is a group comprised of siblings.
Their music is so Canadian - so Gaelic - so Cape Breton!
As we were driving up the Trail, we came across this
very small town
with a very large sign!
We loved Cape Breton.
