doors of kandern

Years ago we were visiting a town where the doors of that town were featured on several lovely postcards. This is my small attempt at duplicating that idea.

This door is just a few inches taller than me!

moving day - july 22, 2010

The day dawned bright but slightly overcast after a night of heavy rain. We were a bit nervous! I prayed and asked the Lord for 5 hours of clear weather. The girls and Howard and I started moving boxes at 7:00.
At 8:00 the help arrived - in throngs! We had 19 men and boys here which included 2 sets of twins!
Chains were started which moved things very quickly.

Wow. No wonder this move was so much work!

The container finally arrived about half an hour late.
We had hired one professional packer and then a few of our trusty volunteers agreed to work inside the container with him.

The big ticket item to move was the piano. We had ordered a crate to pack the piano in but when our packer arrived with it, it was obviously too small. Oh dear. Now what? The moving company gave us some blankets and strapping and then brought in another man to help move the piano out of the house and onto the truck.
What a procedure. I could hardly breathe! One of our friends kept yelling at me, "Eileen, take pictures!" I was somewhat paralyzed and kept forgetting that I had a camera in my hands!
It came down the stairs pretty easily - at least for those of us watching! Those two men with the straps did the whole job themselves.
Then out to the alley and onto the trolley.

Oops. Fortunately this was the only injury of the day.
OK. Now what?

The piano was tipped over on its side, spun around and.....
...hoisted onto the truck.
And, it still works!
Just before 11:30 our part of the load was finished.

A friend of ours is also moving back to Manitoba so her stuff completed the load at 12:02 at which point it started to sprinkle. It had been 5 hours! We waited 2 1/2 hours for the trucker to come to take the container away. The girls and I tackled the house and got the bulk of the cleaning finished up.
John closed the doors...
...I took a picture of the information on the truck (very important to have)...
...and the seal was snapped shut.
That was it. What a strange sensation to watch this truck pull away with all our earthly belongings inside. We signed the final papers and the skies opened up with earnest. It had been a good day. "Thank you" hardly touches what these men and boys did for us on Thursday. What a blessing to have such good people around us. We will miss them! The container is scheduled to arrive in Winnipeg on August 16. For those of you in and around St. Pierre, please stay tuned! We will definitely need help to get that piano OFF the truck!
