saying good-bye

On Wednesday we had an open house to have our friends and neighbours into our home and to say good-bye. My faithful and wonderful friend, Mary, agreed to help me keep the refreshments going and to give me her usual good dose of moral support!
Some of our German friends, Daniela, Ewald and Heidi. Heidi and Ewald welcomed us to the neighbourhood with open arms and by telling us their first names FIRST! We have never called them "Herr" and "Frau" and we've always only used the informal "you" with them. They've been great friends to us.

Lots and lots of good food came through the door with our "guests" so we had a full table and a full house.

Howard did not know that this open house was also a surprise birthday party to celebrate his 50 years with our friends here.
He had known NOTHING until people started arriving and wishing him a happy birthday. So, the big moment was not such a big moment but it still was a special time for him.

These lovely neighbours from across the street - the ones who always do such wonderful decorations on their window ledges all year long - brought us some special gifts and such kind words. Seven years ago they welcomed us to our home with a loaf of freshly baked bread and salt in a small porcelain salt cellar. This was a sign of welcome and hospitality. We were touched by their kindness to us already way back then. They are always such joyful people. We will miss them!
Today we had lunch with Mônika, our Brazilian friend from the company where we've bought our glasses all these years. She is a dear and special friend and we will miss her too!
