june

June was a crazy month for me.
It was my busiest yet for subbing
and I even had a 2 1/2 week term in one music classroom
which took me right to the last day of school.
I was able to get in on lots of end of the year events like the
Track Meet,
the school picnic
and the final school assembly
where I directed the school choir!
I volunteered to take pictures at the school picnic and judging by the
number of my pictures that appeared in the power point
at the assembly
I did a good job!
Our sod arrived a few days after Howard left for
new staff orientation for the mission.
It was a hot day and the guys installing it didn't put an ounce of water on it
while they were working.
A few days later I left for orientation in Minneapolis
and the girls were left with the mammoth task
of watering.
The heat continued and intensified
and the sod took a bit of a hit,
but it's making a comeback now - even with temperatures
continuing to rise on a daily basis.
Fortunately our water comes from a well and doesn't cost us a penny.
We've been watering well and often
and I noticed tonight that many of the neighbours had their
sprinklers going as well.
Because of the heat and humidity and rain at just the right time
the crops look absolutely fabulous.
We noticed tonight on our way home from Winnipeg
that there are crops that will likely be harvested before the week is out.
Orientation was amazing.
Because I am also a mobilization coach (very part time)
I had some of my people there that I've been working with this year.
It was an exciting and overwhelming time for us all
and the energy and joy from the 88 people we are sending out this fall
was palpable.

my mom and dad

My mom sent me this picture this morning.
Some of my cousins are going through their parents' old pictures
and they came across this one of my parents.
My mom and I are trying to figure out when this was taken.
We landed on sometime in the 60s but we're not really sure about that.
We always had a Siamese cat in our house so that doesn't give much of a clue.
The fact that the bottom half of the house is solid green tells us that
this picture could have been taken shortly after the house was finished in the 60s.
But the grey hair
- not sure about that -
being that they would have been in their early 30s.
Then there's the fortrel dress.... 70s?
It's a bit of a mystery.
You can see my dad's amazing creativity in
the wrought iron railing he designed and created.
The two gates in the fence were made to match.
He was a talented and resourceful man.
My mom's green thumb and her love for gardening shows itself too.
My parents are both smiling
- serenely -
because my dad is no doubt home for
the weekend from summer school.
Lots of good memories....

the little peanut

The little Alexis went home yesterday.
Both mother and baby are doing well.
Considering how early she arrived
(the doctors say 5 weeks to a month)
everything is well-developed and functioning well.
So precious.

the ultimate road trip

Friends of ours from Germany
who now live in Alberta
stopped in to see us for a few hours today.
They are on a 5 week trip to the Martimes.
We actually had a bit of a turn in the weather today
so the cooler temps and rain were a huge relief to them.
There's a lot of air on a bike - but not much conditioning!
Have fun you two and drive safely!

now it's official

Last night at 10:00 this precious little girl
Alexis Kyoko
was born to my nephew and his wife.
She has made my sister and my brother-in-law grandparents
(even arriving on their anniversary!)
and she's the first great grandchild and great niece
on my side of the family.
So, even though Howard's nephew and wife
had a baby 2 years ago, which made us all
GREAT!
- in-laws included -
now it's officially official that
I am a great auntie.
At any rate this little bundle,
who arrived a month early,
is making us all feel pretty proud and happy.
Can't wait to see her!

the fruit of her labour

Beth is working down the road at the very big and very HOT
greenhouse this summer.
Dealing with the heat has become a mind game for her.
The work isn't hard but the intense heat and humidity we've been
experiencing the last week and a bit has made the
greenhouse into an extreme "hot spot".
Just getting through the day without succumbing to the heat
has become a real challenge.
The up side is that every so often she brings home some cucumbers.
She said yesterday that's about as good as it's going to get!
We'll take them -
freshly packaged right off the vine.
