louis riel day at the forks in winnipeg

It was a glorious day today!
We took advantage of it and went skating on the Red and
Assiniboine Rivers in Winnipeg.
Unfortunatley, the entire city of Winnipeg also had
the same idea!
Not really - but it was fun to say that!
Of course, lots of people use the ice for activities other than skating.
David has not skated much at all but he did great today!
In the end, I was the only one that fell.
That's what I get for taking pictures whilst skating...
As you can see, there actually was a lot of wide open space.
Katy continues to be very careful with her back.
She watched and waited patiently while the rest of us skated.
Terence came a bit later so he also enjoyed "skating" on his boots.
A rather interesting event was taking place on the river today.
Have you ever heard of "ice canoeing"?
Me neither.
Apparently it's a huge event at the Quebec Winter Carnival.
Today was the first time it was held in Winnipeg.
The winners got a trip to Churchill on the train.
Not too bad at all!
It looks really quite easy but these people were totally exhausted
and some hardly made it the 200 m to the finish line.
Four of the runners have to have 1 foot in the canoe
but the one at the back can push full out with both feet.
It's also Festival du Voyageur in Winnipeg right now
so many people were out in their festive gear.
It's so beautiful to see and of course the
Hudson's Bay coats are always absolutely stunning.
Time for a late lunch of some of the best
fish and chips we've ever had!
What a wonderful day.
