building a village

The work team painting shutters for the new homes.
 It's definitely taking shape.
The works teams put on the roofs.
It's a simple structure but durable enough for this climate.
 "The Lord is my Shepherd
I shall not want"
 I love this flower garden.

my mom

Happy Mother's Day
to my mom!
She's the best and brightest mom ever!

She nursed me through my sicknesses.
Rescued my failed Home-Ec projects.
Commiserated with me when I failed grade 2 theory.
Drove me to Grande Prairie for those pesky music festivals.
Sat on the edge of her seat every time I played in church
(for nervousness - not excitement!).
Smuggled me out of the hospital after my broken nose surgery.
Carefully cut through real shoelaces in my 16th birthday cake
(which the boys had baked!).
Allowed me to have a .22!
Showed me the joy of baking!
Typed - how many school projects and papers?
(maybe even did a bit of editing along the way...)
Helped me move way too many times.
Made my favourite meals.
Taught me how to clean!
Sat on my bed with me and listened as I read through my bible.
Taught me about Jesus.

She loves me and my husband.
And my girls.
She is a blessing to us all.
And we honour her today!
I love you, my wonderful mom!!

a bit more of the "garden of paradise"

 The well-marked rows.
One of the work teams that was staying in our hotel
was also helping with building an additional chicken coop
so the flock could be expanded
and more money earned from the sale of the eggs.
Ben's instructions!
This is a "fish farm" and the green stuff floating is water lettuce.
The garden plots are all clearly numbered.
This guy tried very hard to blend into the scenery.
Bee hives which the bees apparently prefer
to the "traditional" hives.
 Sweet potatoes
Do you know what these are?
It's cashew fruit with one lonely nut per fruit.
This is why these nuts are so expensive.
Plus, the roasting process, which is also toxic and can kill
certain animals (like chickens, for example),
is quite involved and time consuming.

villa spruceland

This is part two of the village that our brother-in-law
started in 2007.
The work team from Canada - mostly Spruce Grove -
was there working while we were visiting.
Their job is to put on the roofs and install and doors and windows.
 The school at Villa Spruceland.
 The next building site.
 The garden.
If people leave their garden plot untended for
a certain period of time, it is given to another family.
 Garden test plots
where they teach people how and when to plant.
The little white markers are "Ben's garden".
He gave a full list of instructions to the gardener
(a missionary from Bolivia).
The list was clearly written on the white board
in the garden shed!
It's all very organized and amazing to see paved streets.
The national office of the Samaritan Foundation.
The big guy in the red shirt was part of a church team
from the United States
that was helping with DVBS and doing work projects.
They, along with another team, were staying at our hotel.
These people were all working with the Samaritan Foundation.
 Medical clinic
The day Howard's dad passed away, the 1000th house
was dedicated.
His parents were supposed to have been there for this event,
however, his dad had suffered a heart attack,
was hospitalized and then died the morning after
being released from the hospital.
February 8, 2011.
This little lady was so happy to see Howard's sister, Dori.
She was very proud to show us her home
and the work that her husband was doing.
He was making charcoal - burning wood until the
impurities are gone - and selling it.
This is exactly the same stuff we used in Brazil
so it was a familiar and pleasant smell.
She has taken many courses and her certificates
are proudly displayed.
Some people put a lot of effort into improving their home.
The carpentry shop where all the doors and shutters/windows
are built.
Shortly before the work team arrived, the shop had been broken
into and almost all the tools and machines were stolen.
This put the team's progress way behind
which was a huge disappointment to them.
This lovely Haitian man runs the shop.
Ben's wood shipped all the way from Alberta.
 Shutters
A local business in the village.
