pamukkale

This famous "cotton castle", a
UNESCO
world heritage site
 is located in southwestern Turkey.
The travertines that have formed have been left
by carbonate minerals from the flowing water.

This one is for our German-speaking friends!
The ancient ruins of Hierapolis are located
on top of the mountain.
 Philip's martyrium.

temple of artemis/diana

The grand Temple of Artemis or Diana
is now reduced to this.
It is basically a swampy wetland.
A stork's nest sits on the only remaining column...
and a few meters away a lovely pond is full of
 turtles.
The turtles were piled high just like this
all around the edge of the pond.
They were hiding amongst the bushes and maybe
waiting for their turn on the rocks!

ephesus

 The goddess Nike.
Now you know where the "swoosh" got its inspiration.
My favourite part of an extensive mosaic sidewalk.
 Imagine putting this puzzle together.
 Incredibly elaborate decorating inside
this higher end housing.
 In floor heating.
 Frescos
 Mosaics on every floor.
 Plumbing
 Looking down main street Ephesus.
 The Celsus Library.
An amazing thought to walk these same streets that
Paul and John
Apollos
and
Priscilla and Aquilla
also walked.

the recycled orchestra

On Wednesday evening we were treated to an amazing
concert by the Recycled Orchestra
from Paraguay.
These kids have been raised on a landfill.
You can watch a video about their story here.
The violins have been made from old paint cans
and baking pans.
The can from this double bass once
held petroleum.
 An oil can cello.
A saxophone made from a water pipe
with a downspout from an eaves-trough.
This little girl is only 11!
She is a gifted player and was obviously born to
play the saxophone.
A trumpet with a German fingering system.
This young woman is from Argentina.
Besides playing a mean tenor sax,
she gave quite a tango demonstration!
 It was a remarkable evening.
Watch the video!
You will be amazed.
