cold day

Yes.
Yet another "cold" day.
This day - today - was cold enough to close the schools
in our division (the only one to close today!)
but not cold enough to keep the teachers away!
This morning at 6:00 the temp was
-35
with the windchill a balmy
-46.
So we all had a wonderfully long day of
work without the kids.
This has been a rather brutal winter.
And
I have to confess
that I am getting weary of the cold, snow, wind and
rather dicey driving conditions.
As I write it is storming yet again
and highway driving is strongly discouraged.
Tomorrow is our "Winter Fun Day".
Isn't that an oxymoron?
We shall see what the morning brings us weather-wise.
Maybe our "Winter Fun Day"
will be spent indoors -
my fav place to enjoy winter activities!

the big event

 Yesterday was the day.
After countless hours of preparation everything was ready.
I tried to make the house look like a Swiss restaurant.
The checkered tablecloths I sewed were definitely worth the effort.
Fortunately I had my Swiss t-shirt.
One of the guests asked me if I had had that specially
made for the event as well!
A lot of food was consumed
and everyone loved the meal!
The Swiss trivia game was a big hit as well.
The men squeaked out the win but everyone went home
with a Swiss army knife anyway.
They were pleased.
It was lots of fun
but I have to say I'm thankful that these meals
are only offered once every three years!
I have a feeling we just might be asked to host one again. :)

snow day

It's a snow day here in southern Manitoba.
The snow that fell yesterday is being blown around
and around
at speeds up to 70 km/h.
The Trans Canada highway and all highways
east, west and south of Winnipeg have been closed.
Coming home yesterday after school was already challenging
as I came upon a wall of white
and could barely see the lines on the road.
But I crept along and made it home safely.
It's on days like these that I am extra happy
to be a teacher.
School is closed due to safety reasons.
I know it's really for the kids
but I'm happy to tag along.

the deep freeze continues

Another beautiful, cold, crisp and sunny prairie day.
It's so beautiful that one would never guess it's -30C
and much colder
with the dreaded wind chill factor.
Wind chills this morning made it feel like -46C.
Fifteen school divisions closed their schools today
due to the cold.
Ours did not.
It was not quite cold enough to meet
school closure policy requirements.
We had only 61% attendance at our school
and 4 of our13 busses
did not arrive.
I think it would have been a good day to cancel school!

oh ya

I dedicate this to myself
my girls
and my husband.
We have all come a long way in our
math abilities
but boy have there been some
struggles along the way!

it's kinda cold

We've just come through the coldest December in 100 years.
No wonder the furnace seems to run pretty much ALL day.
Predictions are that January will be much the same.
But, if it means that it's too cold for the kids to be outside
and I have to do indoor supervision
that's fine with me!
On Saturday we had a brutal storm.
Visibility was near zero and
we could barely see two houses down from us at times.
The next morning it was clear and COLD
again.
We are thankful for a warm house.
Warm clothes.
And warm vehicles.
Except for the seats.
Katy's car has heated seats.
I have to admit I'm a bit jealous about that...
